SW KS, near Dodge City | Here's the thing about the cattle and the western plains... The reason the cattle left is b/c we couldn't grow feed, and couldn't afford to feed them... We've been abnormally wet this summer, through a big chunk of W KS, W OK and W TX. So now there's grass and an abundance of feed. That will bring the cattle back. That will also grow more grain. It's more of a symbiotic relationship than an either/or situation. Those areas that were cattle areas, and where the cattle will go back to, didn't generally produce much grain anyway, as they took it off in beef. The beef left b/c they couldn't grow anything, not because they switched to grain production.
Another odd fact, and this is where the cattle really disappeared from, and I don't know the exact percentage, but it was over 1/2 the cattle herd I think in the US was actually in the southeastern states in small herds. Those areas could easily go back to grass and herds of 30-40 head instead of grain now. | |
