61 and just coasting now. Rent out most of the land and run a few cows. Wondering what to do with our farms, as there are no kids........
Been a few older guys here take a 'kid' under their wing for a few years and then hand them the farm. Some guys walk away completely, others stick around - but that has to be agreed upon up front, what's the goal, when it takes place.. etc. Dairys too.. So a lot of time and money tied up to be handing over, but if there's no kids - or no kids to take over the farm, then something has to be done with it. One guy I know wasnt a farm kid, but into 4h and hired hand and whatnot growing up, he spent 5 yrs on a dairy and took over ownership just last yr with his wife and small kids. |
