If the calf can't stand, I straddle the calf and make sure they are on their sternum. That position gives you good control if they start to fight. Do not tube them if they are laying flat. I use a solid tube about 18 inches long which I pull slightly toward myself as I guide it down the calf's throat. Never lost a calf due to getting fluid in it lungs. We raised Guernsey's as a kid so I had plenty of practice....
