Dr. Keith Bolson used to say imagine your bunker, cut the face in half diagonally, and put the two triangles together to form a peak in the middle - that's the dimension and shape your pile needs to be.  Be sure to drive over both directions, and it will pack at least as good as a bunker. 



No way a drive over pile will be as good or better than a bunker...
You always have spoilage on the sides, not with a bunker. And especially not with a 400 ton pile...

Here they say you need to be able to refresh 1 meter of face (or ~3ft) a week. So your pile needs to be at least 52 meters long.
