Is it possible to just use the thing on public wi-fi networks with a texting app and not bother with reconnecting the phone to a service at all? IF that would work, that might be the best way to go.
If the phone is only connected to wifi (doesn't have cell service at all), you won't be able to use a texting app, as texting services are provided via cell. But you could use email or other web-based services. This assumes that he'll always have wifi access when he needs to use the phone. Since you mentioned "emergencies" as one reason for wanting the phone, I would not recommend a wifi-only option. While any cell phone can still call 911 (even with no active cell plan), there might be "emergencies" that don't merit 911. i.e. "mom, help, I forgot my cleats!!" |
