Subject: Need a crash course on dual screens please

I'm doing quite a bit of typing, notes building, presentation building, as I am working in ministry part time. It gets frustrating working on my notes, and trying to put a presentation together. I am not real savvy when it comes to computer hardware, but I think an extra screen would be really handy. I have been known to even use the laptop to read off of, and the desktop to work on. What would be the minimum amount of equipment to get an extra screen hooked in?

Is there a splitter that just plugs in? or is it more complicated than that. Also looking to do it fairly cheap if possible. And if it matters we are Windows based and will be staying with windows, so no suggestions to go Apple which seems to pop up in just about every thread somewhere. HA!
