Subject: JD Roller Chain Made in china?

North west MN

I went the easy route and bought new roller chain for my combine in pre cut lengths from JD Dealer. I was surprised to see they use cheap china roller chain. Have they always sold cheap china chain? If to do it again I think I would just buy rolls of diamond.

It would be 50.00/ft. if they used Diamond.

Do they have jd stamped in each link like they used to when it was made in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

U S chain is not that high when purchased from other sources I would not use Chinese chain on a combine, even if I drunk green cool aid, jd used to sell you good u s chain and reasonably priced, that was then, this is now.

Your dealer most likely carries bulk Diamond or Drives bulk chain and will cut to length what you need. If the Deere pre-cut stuff was quality chain, the dealer cut stuff would still be cheaper.

Return it. Buy from a company that sells a quality product. If we go along with this, the quality will continue to decline to increase profits. We can control this.

My Deere dealers's precut chain is Chinese. The Deere stuff on the rolls is still made in the USA. I just buy the rolls now.

Was over a decade ago, the chain for my planter from the dealer said China on the cardboard box.

I'm sure it is built to top JD specs tho and not like other China chain. *

2 years ago I was taking parts off my planter that said made in USA and the replacement parts with the same JD part number say made in China. I'm 100% deere but now I really don't think there is any quality difference between the major manufacturers.

Stopped at the local JD store to pick up some 1" extended race bearings. Needed four, only had one. OK, says CHINA on the bearing face, $27.00, and I still had to buy the collar separate. Went across the road to the other color to get the other three. Say's USA/Fafnir on the bearing face, $44.00, and came with the lock collar. Should of bought all four there. Cheap chain and bearings are poor economy on a combine that has to go when you've got to go. Not sure where CHINA chain and bearings are best used, maybe as a door stop? (BTW, those four bearings were the only 1" extended race available in the whole dang county, so had to settle on the CHINA bearing!)

Arva, Ontario

.... vented my wrath on one of the owners of the dealership (not the parts slinger), and had it cut off a roll of USA made. (Darned if it wasn't the same price buying it by the foot and having the poor parts guy counting links and cutting it). Who do you suppose was benefitting from the boxed Chinese made stuff.  Everybody but the customer...

Owner of the dealership went on-and-on about how it was made to John Deere quality standards. I replied that it might be fine chain, but does NOT meet my standards.

Bought for a Claas Lexion a year later. Got to keep pushing back, or the plant in Moline will be relocating to Asia as well.

I'd put on O-Ring chain on your Deere unload auger drive. We wear out 2 a year, hopefully going O-Ring fixes it.

DO NOT! Put Import chain on a Combine , it will not last! Use Drives or Diamond .
Google , redboarchain he claims to have quality chain, I have used some for other applications and seems okay
But only Drives for the Combine , import chain will stretch and be nothing but trouble

Paul good point ,quality is decided by what the mfg. asks for in specs, Chinese products can be speced better than NA if companies want too . Remember as a kid everybody says how crappy Japanese parts were and now Toyota engineers best cars in the world

I agree with the "put an o-ring chain on unloading auger" comment. We have a 9660 and special ordered a DID(Daido) x-ring chain for the unloading auger because of the incredible life they deliver on 4-wheelers and dirt bikes. We've put 2 hard seasons of corn harvest through the machine and it has required absolutely no adjustment or lubrication where with even a USA 60H we'd burn up 2 a season. I've noticed that Claas uses o-ring chain all over their combine which I think is awesome. I seriously think if Deere would use quality x-ring or o-ring chains throughout the machine the sheet metal would be wore through and the machine would be headed for Mexico before you had drive chain issues. We use x-ring chain on every piece of equipment that burns up chain and have had excellent luck. A 530 chain is a direct replacement for a 50 and can be purchased at most motorcycle/atv shops. For a 40, 60, or 80 chain we've had to special order at bearing supply store because there is not a motorcycle equivalent. DID has been the brand that has held up the best for us with RK coming in second. We've tried other brands and many have low quality o-rings that crack or deteriorate and the chain life is not much better than a standard chain. There may be other brands out there that are great quality but I've been burnt too much experimenting with the 3 or so other brands I've tried. DID states that their o-ring chain will outlast regular chain 5-20x in dusty environment and the X-ring is 1.5x more life than O-ring.

x2. Location means little, companies build to spec while meeting budget and supply conditions. There's a lot of crap coming out of the good ol USA. It's become an excellent marketing tool. That's not to say nothing good comes out of it, but buying something strictly based on COO isn't always a guarantee.  Stereo typically speaking, Chinese stuff is poor because that's what companies go there for, cheap goods. Stereotype's can be good/bad.  Use it as a tool, if you simply think everything in the USA is good and everything in China is terrible, then that's fine but its a narrow way of thinking. Realizing that stuff from China can be good while also realizing that in general a USA product will at least be decent is a better way to think at the start. Best to base your judgement on how the product performs and what the application is though. Something like a german built precise to 0.001" roller chain with viton o-rings, chromed faces, hardened pins, and plutonium infused metal is probably a waste on your **** spreader you use a few days out of the year.  Buy what you need for the situation and realize COO is just a starting point, not a definitive test of quality.

As a parts dealer and mechanic I have seen A LOT of chain! China chain is 1/5th the cost of USA chain, but not even close to 1/5th the quality. I won't even sell a customer the china stuff. Its garbage. Period.

They have both... if you ask, and have them check... they can get Deere branded chain, made in the US, by Drives.

Buy you chain from shoup! They have USA chain and China crap!! Yes I said China crap because just about everything out of that country is subpar crap!! I dont care what it is it is made with 3rd grade material. Also why by chain from John Deere anyway? You are probably paying an extra 20% just because the name is on it!
