The Mississippi used to spread out at it's mouth, and drop most of it's silt and nutrient load on the coastal marshes. Now, with the controlled channels, it doesn't do that nearly as much. So much of the silt and nutrients needed to sustain the coastal marshes travel out to sea, where they cause problems.
