Subject: Beef Cow Winter Feed Question

Dougherty, IA
In Iowa on fairly decent soils, how many tillable acres does it take to feed a cow, and background a calf to 600 lbs ?

I have an opportunity to rent some pasture in a year or two and get in the cow-calf business. Hopefully the cows come a little cheaper by then too!

Is it more economical to raise hay on these acres or grow corn silage, then plant wheat/rye to graze in the fall, then chop wheat/rye in the spring and do it all again?

I am assuming hay would be more simple, but I see a cost advantage/lb of feed by going the silage route. I have been saving money from the town job to buy the pairs and the equipment with as little debt as possible.

Open to any and all ideas, thanks!
