Faunsdale, AL | X2............test it after it has a chance to ensile properly. The 50% rule of thumb assumes you ensile with reasonable chances of good fermentation......moisture OK, exclude oxygen, stage of growth with plenty of sugars etc.
Nitrate does not diminish much in dry hay during storage.
Some may confuse nitrate with prussic acid/cyanide compounds which can also be a problem in Sudan, johnsongrass and sorghums which are GRAZED when very young, or more typically after the crop has been stung by frost etc. The cyanide compounds are volatile and by the time hay is cured and baled, it is safe to feed. | |
