I use a product called waste away. We've tried many other products but this was the first one that really worked. I actually became a dealer after using it. After 2 weeks of using it all the crust was gone in the pit and their were no more flies either. This will be the first full season using it as I started last july but we got the pit down to 4 inches in a 2400 head barn with just 2 pumps. Its supposed to keep the nitrogen levels more even and raise it 5 to 12 points per 1000 gallons also but I won't have proof of that until november
