It happened in the 80's and nobody really cared. At that time Europe passed up the US on ag technology. At that time we were told agriculture no longer is important as we can import our food, and most people buy their food at the grocery store. I remember our president telling that we should export the farmers and keep the wheat. The problem was he didn't realize who raised the wheat!
You just cant miss an opportunity to turn it political can you?
