Eastern South Dakota
Try getting into a three crop rotation, corn, wheat, and beans. Manage your wheat like you said and it will reward you most years. For me it also helps with resistant weeds, allows time for land improvements like tile, banks more water for the next crop, allows me to strip till, drives up row crop yields with better fertility placed right giving consistent yield gains of 5 bushels in beans and 8-12 and sometimes more in corn, improves soil health, protects soil, increases organic matter, earlier cash flow, spreads out work load(run the AC instead of the heater), less drying, not have to harvest so much in the dark, and much more. Also experiment with other crops and rotations. I farm in EC SD by Watertown and think there are only a few producers left that have any wheat in the rotation or at least any meaningful acres of it but it works for me.
