Subject: When to cut barley for hay.

North Dakota

This spring we planted a saline grass mix into a bunch of white and wet spots.  We used feed barley as a cover.  Well as it turned out we have a pretty good barley crop out there now.  From what I have read we should cut it in early dough stage.  It will be cut with a conditioner and put up into large rounds.  Whats everyones opinion on when to cut it.  And do I need to worry about who gets these bales, meaning will it be okay for bred cows, replacement heifers, calves after weaning?  Thanks for any input.

P.S.  Chopping is not a option, hay to be put up in large rounds.
