EC Nebraska | It's not that the ground is "that sandy," it's that it is nothing but sand. Pure white sand, under a couple inches of grass. Remember, when the buffalo roamed that region, 90% of the Sandhills was mobile sanddunes. The fact that it's now a (mostly) stable grassland is really an amazing management success story. There have been attempts to row crop farm it over the years, and most of them have ended poorly.
