West of Lincoln a little bit | we didn't start with tons of money, but we did have dad's base to open the door (in your case grandpa). Year 1 we started with 80 acres that we shared 50/50 with landlord (that was 15 years ago, so your starting amount of 250 is good today). Farmed with dad, had to buy our own tractor, but traded use of dad's other equip for labor helping him. Since then have been required to get our own land to rent and buy more and more of our own equip. Had a town job during the winter only, even when we just rented the 80, because we irrigate here and irrigated land is a full time job in the summer, dad needed the help. Between the winter town job and the rented 80 we made it work (and tractor payment), growing slow and steady. Wife also had town job full time. Still farming with dad, but we have our own acres, our own equip except for sharing a few key pieces (combine, etc) and much of the shared stuff we own 50/50 also. |
