I believe you are thinking the right thoughts. Had some down wheat (virtually flat in spots). Rented a swather to cut and then used my old pickup head. Worked really well other than taking in all that straw but I had no choice. Any swathers around? Then you'll need a pickup head too.
You could also get a custom guy with a draper head to perhaps do it.
