We were taught both, most stuff I can roughly convert in my head, except pressures and things you don't use that much. I like the fact that the volume and linear measurements cross (1 ml = 1 cubic cm, 1 litre = 10 cm cubed, etc). How many sq. ft. in a gallon?
The British system is a little clunky, but our country and yours was built on that - mile roads, sections, acres, etc.
Just like languages, it sure is nice if you know more than one.
