If so many companies have switched to metric, then why is it so difficult to find metric fine thread bolts, metric shafting, etc? Sure you may be able to find a few of the common steel short bolts, etc, but the overall supply infrastructure for metric materials in the US is a dismal failure. When we needed metric stainless steel shafts for a repair job, we found that it was actually cheaper to buy standard English sized stainless shafts and send them out to be centerless ground to metric diameters than it was to find metric shafts(if you could even find them in the typical materials needed in manufacturing). Sure anything can be sourced with enough lead time if the volume is high enough. But don't expect the metric stuff will be easy to find or readily available, it isn't. After 30+ years of supposedly converting to the metric system there hasn't been much progress, if anything I think supply infrastructure has become smaller.
