Asus would be my pick. Spend the extra money and get a SSD, or a dual drive with the OS on the SSD. Virtually eliminates hard drive issues and cuts the battery usage way down. If you can get windows 7 now I would go that route. Otherwise 8.1 has some "retro" features to make the experience more like the old windows versions. The only thing I can see windows 8 being really handy for is tablets or phones.
