Subject: RE: ih 584 any good?

Electric 4wd on those late IHs and CaseIHs was a pain. Any fault (bad switch, bad wires, bad alternator) would cause it to lock in 4wd (required working power to DISENGAGE the fwa) which was a death knell when travelling on the road. No fuel solenoid meant that folks used to running older tractors would boost a tractor with dead alternator in the morning and run it all day with now power and 4wd locked in. Our 584 has the big mechanical idiot-proof lever. Our 885 has the electric 4wd actuation. The FWA driveshaft has been torn out twice by people that either couldn't tell or didn't care that it was locked in 4wd when it shouldn't be. I consider a design that causes major self destruction for a minor problem to be grounds for flogging the engineer responsible. The 584 has been rock solid except for understandable wear/age issues or abuse in the line of duty.
