Alton, Ia | If I understand your situation right, you've got a bunch of loads, already wired in, spread out across barns, ie distance, and you only want part of each location covered by the generator. Easy solution of "non-emergency circuit panel" >> transfer switch>> "emergency loads" won't work or is too pricey due to rewiring.
Square D used to make a series of breakers that had a switch also, so they were combination overcurrent and control devices. Not sure they still make them, or cost, but if that worked, you could tie the control lead into power ahead of the generator, and those circuits would only be hot when line power is on.

Although you may be better off just standbying everything, cost and hassle wise. | |
