OK, I'll give it a try. The positives of the manual air system are:
1. The air bags exert nearly the same downforce, regardless of position. Lets say your toolbar is bridging a terrace. The opener in the bottom of the terrace, with the parallel arms almost all the way down, sees almost the same downforce as a opener that is almost fully "up." That is, unless they actually hit the stops. Theoretically, you could do almost the same thing with a very soft coil spring with lots of pre-load, but the air bags fit the space better.
2. Changing the air pressure changes the downforce on several (or all) the openers from a single point.
You're right, that the full vs empty hopper issue affects both suspensions in basically the same way.
