New London, Wisconsin | I released 98 hens several years ago at 8 weeks old during mid summer. I got a deal from a guy who ran out of pen space. The predators were doing very well but the wary ones were fine. I'm guessing up to 50% made it till fall. I may do it again.
You could tell to the bird which ones had the wild streak and which didn't. As they were released from the 6 bird boxes one or two would explode out the door and fly until they were out of sight, they would be fine. A few would look curiously and follow the others. The last few would stay in the box until I dumped them out. At that point they look at me as if to say "when is lunch?" I said, looking skyward, " your just in time for it".
That fall the crowing was incredible, so they must have invited enough boy friends to the party.
