But by doing this all the top(or most) blew away. Dad said the first thing he had to do was get something growing, even if its weeds to hold the last bit of top soil in place.


I haven't seen erosion for a couple decades. That is when most guys started no tilling. But we are small grains, and so we have tight rows, and that is probably a different deal too.. 



This was back in the late eighties when this happened. It was in the mid nineties when I saw my last dust storm. More people went to min or no till, cut back on summer fallow. Used to see a lot of dust storms before that.
