Subject: RE: Canola production question

Independence OR
The Short answer is that it is complicated. We have had a ban on canola production since 2008 issued by the state department of AG. However this past year the ODA decided to loosen up the rules and allow production of canola in the dry land Ares of the valley. This caused the anti canola people to take the issue to our state legislature were the issued a ban on canola, BUT they issued a million dollars to Oregon State to "research" the issue so we are allowed to grow 500 acres/year for thru 14, 15, and 16, crop years, then it is banned.

The lesson to be learned from this is that farmers need to work with each other and not against each other even if they don't agree entirely. I think that both sides are frustrated with the situation. In my opinion is never good to have the bureaucrats and the state legislature telling farmers what to plant and not plant. Now we are facing similar type legislation on GMO issues and I really hope farmers here can put up a united front this time.
