So anhydrous means that it contains no water so the reason why it burns you is when it gets on your skin or basically anywhere on your body, it depeletes the skin of water which is why it burns. Prolonged exposure of this can cause side effects especially to your trachea and lungs. One thing that I have found out this year is to have a full face respirator that can filter out the ammonia. 3M sells them. With it on, I can get out of the tractor and not have to inhale any of the fumes. I was skeptical at first, but called 3M to make sure it works on anhydrous ammonia as well.
