I doesn't even needs to be that drastic. "Here" IMO they could go to one per county. There are 70,000~ in the county and you could get to the county seat within 25 min no matter where you are in the county.

In some parts of the country I'm sure that wouldn't work but I think it could here.



We've got 11 I believe in our county, of only 9,700 people, but it is a good hour and a half drive to the other side of county. In the summer on good roads. Most of them aren't staffed anyway, rural carriers just drop off and pick up there. They talked about closing some a while back, and everyone thought the 'other' town's office should be closed, not theirs.

Some of the rural carrier routes here are impressive, long drive, few people. Isn't cost effective I'm sure, but neither is Amazon Prime sending UPS 100 mile round trip with no other stops (he's the only one out there) to deliver toilet paper to my friend's ranch. It all works out in the end.
