Kingston,Mi | Direct injected has the answer; burning kills certain early germinating cool season weeds and grasses. Periodic burning doesn't effect the later germinating warm season grasses and forbs (forbs are desirable broadleaves while weeds are undesirable). Where it is feasible, many of our warm season stands are burnt in Michigan, but many times the timing doesn't work and the owners resort to mowing. Then we have a select group of land owners who at the earliest opportunity burn cool season grasses so that both warm and cool season weeds have a better chance at growing. This because they burn just as soon as the previous years standing grass is able to sustain fire and weeks before any weeds emerge. It is also a requirement to burn so that the smoke from burning ditch banks blows across the road, blowing away from traffic is for amateurs. | |
