1: Click on the windows logo on keyboard. 2: Use the down arrow on the lower left corner of the screen. 3: find the Excel or other program you want to put on the start screen and right click. 4: use the pin to start screen tab. Windows 8.1 is very easy to use if one will spend 30 minutes with the Microsoft tutorials for it.
