NW Illinois Stephenson county | Many year ago, I wanted to have lime applied to a field going to oats as a nurse crop, so the oats was planted in late May. Yield was lower and it had ALOT of rust in it. Every time I started a pull type Massey Harris Clipper combine after unloading, there was a giant cloud of rust that came out of the back. I planted almost always after April 1st, because I wanted a smooth field for the hay crop and it yielded 50-60 bu with no fertilizer. I quit growing oats for grain because the alfalfa grew so high I would clip some of it even in standing oats and it is near impossible to seperate the leaves from the oats. Are you planting oats alone or with some seeding for a cover crop after the oats is combined? |
