Putting shavings on the bottom with a layer of paper towel over the top seems to work pretty well. I usually do this for a day or two- that should keep them eating their food instead of the shavings.
I used to use newspaper, but it's too slippery. I set myself up for a lot of leg issues later on doing it that way.
