I love Chinese elms. Take your climate, heat it up 10 degrees or so, add 40 inches of pan evaporation, and just try to grow anything else.

Dad planted several other types of trees here when he planted the Siberian elms. ALL the others have been dead for 40 years. The elms hung on, but many of them have died in the last four years, too.

Cottonwoods? Not even close to the drought/heat tolerance of the elms.

There may be tougher trees available now...I'm looking.
