| I run the free "Home" edition of Sophos UTM (formerly Astaro Security Gateway) on a PC I put together (with a Q6700 Core2 Quad CPU and 8 GB of RAM) as a web filter. All the data coming from my ISP gets run through various filters (plus 2 different AV inspections) prior to reaching my computer (and it receives a third AV inspection inside of the computer). Not the easiest thing to set up, but I wouldn't go online without it.
The CPU speed and number of cores definitely affects the throughput of the web filter. I am looking for a Q9550 or Q9650 CPU as an upgrade, but I haven't seen any advertised at a good price so far.
