After sharing a mower with my parents for 4 years, my wife is ready for her own. I think I'd prefer a zero turn.

What brand has the best value? I think a 48" deck would be fine. Currenty, I can get it done in about 45-60 mintues with an LX188.

I bought a Areins (sp?) zoom 42 a couple years ago. I know it isn't commercial quality but I wouldn't be spending a ton of money if you can currently mow your yard with a tractor in less than an hour.

I paid $2200 for it brand new. It beats the hell out of the 1450 Cub cadet it replaced.

We have 3 snapper pro's made by ferris and like them well. They seem to be priced well for what they are. We had gravely and dixie chopper before and snapper definitely holds a steep bank better than either of those two.

+1

I've got Exmark and Grasshopper. Both have held up well.
For me, I've grown very fond of the horizontal shaft engines like Kohler on certain brands. They help to shorten the length of engine sticking out behind you. Both the diesel and gasoline powered ZTR's have me sold.

Gotta have a welded deck.

I have a Country Clipper with a joystick also.

They are built by Shivvers Manufacturing of Corydon, Iowa (the grain bin company).

For several years they built decks for five or six other companies (I think Grasshopper and Dixie chopper but not sure). They then decided to use off season labor better and started building the whole mower.

I've been real happy with mine.

With the size and price you're most likely looking for, it won't really matter as they're almost all made by MTD. If you're looking for quality, I would look at Hustler. Not sure on the price of the 48" mowers but I'm sure they're going to be a little more than a Cub Cadet or Toro of that size but will be better quality. If looking for commercial grade, the Hustler can't be beat IMO. We have a Kubota front mount deck that we love but it's not as quick as a zero turn. Lets us get under bushes and such though. A lot less trimming to do.

I was in your situation a couple of years ago. I bought a one or two year old grasshopper (72" deck I believe). I've been happy with it but I would do it differently if I were to do it again. I bought it from a dealer and it was a fair amount less than new but I discovered a month or so later that it was a LOT more than the auction value of a machine with similar hours. Like by a factor of two of maybe even three.

I guess if I were you I would keep sharing with your parents until a low houred model comes up on Big Iron, Purple Wave or whatever other auction you happen to stumble upon. I imagine they go for less later in the year.

I think most of the brands that have been mentioned are good but my preference would be Exmark, Ferris and Grasshopper. The first two from what I've read and the last one from my experience with them.

One thing I really like about the grasshopper is the deck is a long ways out in front of you and that helps you get under stuff. Other than that, I'm sure there are many good choices.

Ive been a hustler fan for years, completely welded thick walled frame and very simple to work on... honestly these days mowers are like 4wheelers. there pretty much all good machines for awhile, longevity is what your paying for. i would steer away for a kohler or briggs engine though. kawi and honda are my favorites

We have a cub cadet zforce 44. It replaced a 2166 cub cadet and cut our mowing time by well over 1/3 with only a 2"bigger deck. Overall, it has been o.k. I wish it had a better deck. The one on it is tinny.

Johnson Bros not far from you is a good resource of mowers and parts and experience.

I'm mowing with a 42" snapper middle of the line. It needs more weight on the rear tires, they slip and spin a lot. I might add a concrete block out on the back end for some ballast. Its a mid deck. With the rear tires at the back end, turning a corner of small radius at the mower is difficult, but if the yard is organized for the tractor mower, it will be easy with a zero turn.

I have changed the way I mow to make it more efficient. I make my first three passes across one end so two of the three throw the grass to the end, and I make those passes separated by about 2/3 the deck width. Then I start driving in rectangles mowing the first strip left then making a new full width pass separated by that 2/3 mower deck width, so half my passes are full width, and half are 2/3 and those are finishing. A little time between the first full width cut and the clean up sometimes lets the grass run off by the wheels stand back up for a smoother finish.

The zero turn will probably mow your yard in about half the time you do it in now.  But if your wife is going to run it, I would suggest she try one first, a neighbor? or someone's.  They ride ruff.  She may or may not like it.

I like my Ferris but I'm not buying another mower with bulldozer steering (2 handles to hold on to). The next mower I'm getting is going to be that commercial John Deer model with the deck out front, rear engine and a steering wheel. Also, forget the 48. Go as big as you can get. 60 or bigger (more beer time).

back in 93 I bought an Arien's zero turn 16 hp with 48in deck ran that 10 years with no problems. I was going to replace spindle bearings and the alumin casting were wore. so Snapper dealer talked me into the new Snapper zero turn, Big Mistake, it was snappers first in house design. Deck had bolts going through it where grass would catch. blew one drive gearbox under warranty and a second after. Wife got that in the divorce. Glad to see it go. I now have a Smiplicty with full suspension. Great riding mower. $$$
If your wife does the mowing she maybe doesn't drive like a wild man?? how smooth is your lawn? You may not need the heaviest zero turn made.
That Arien's was a cheap mower for using it 10 years. and no repairs. It didn't come from a box store back then. That's my .02

We have to 60" Grasshoppers. Front mount deck, so you just flip it up to clean or sharpen blades. Cub Cadet mid mount before, hated sharpening blades. We haven't had much go wrong, electric clutch in warranty, couple belts and a tensioner. Probably 1000 hours between them both. One gas one diesel. I wouldn't buy another gas one. Diesel is just WAY superior. Also +1 on the used market/auction value. Since we bought have seen similar mowers go REAL cheap at auction. Think used mower market is similar to used toilet paper market.

I have a toro 5400 so far it been good I rebuilt the deck spindles for like $30 from loco bearing shop crossed the deck belt over. I have like 300 hr on it and im hard on it. I really liked the bad boy the the time cus it had wheel motors but I didn't want a briggs in a v twin. ferris and exmark are basicly the same. my sister just got a ferris I like it.

As far as zero-turn mowers go, we owned a Grasshopper for (approx 8 yrs) a Toro for (approx 5 yrs) Our last two have been the Z930a John Deere and theres absolutely night and day difference. The ride is much nicer, and where I was constantly buying parts for the Grasshopper & Toro, I havent spent a dime, other than oil, filters & blades on the Deere. Do a search on TractorHouse under the riding mower section.....theres 5922 listed, next closest brand is like 700.

As a couple of guys have said, if the wife is running it she needs to try them out.  My wife and I have similar mowers but hers operates just a little different than mine.  I would suggest the brand is not nearly as important as getting a commercial duty mower from a good dealer.  We have had residential and commercial duty mowers, and had them from different dealers.  For our area the local Deere dealer is hard to beat for service and has a fair price. But just because it is green doesn't mean it's built commercial.  I can buy a residential duty Deere zero turn from Lowe's, but it is not the same as a commercial duty from a dealer.

We had a Husqvarna that mowed as good as anything and better than most.  But every woman who drove it came back commenting they needed ... ummm .. better support.  It rode rough.  And our local dealer just could not turn things around in the shop fast enough.  We had a fairly simple problem under warranty.  It took nearly 3 weeks to get it back.  We had a warranty problem with my new Deere Z930R (it was actually a problem that a tech bulletin was issued on. When I took it in the service guy said he had my name on his list to call this week about it)  I got it back in 2 business days.

Once you get a zero turn you won't go back. We now have 4 in the family, 2 Deere's, a Woods, and a Big Boy.   I did buy a used $100 lawn tractor to pull the lawn roller with last winter.

Grasshopper with a front deck would be my first choice. My family has owned a memorial gardens for years and they've ran Grasshopper 720 series diesels for the last 20 years almost. They hardly ever have any problems and they've got some rough people running them that don't take care of them at all. If I didn't buy a Grasshpper I'd look at an Exmark.

Also will deliver, pick up and warranty at your house for no cost. We are located over an hour and half away, but have always had next day service for any warranty issues. We have two 72" mowers with diesel motors, don't go cheap on the air ride seat worth the money!

Like others say, if she does the mowing, let her pick it out.
Now, I do the mowing and had a 48" JD tractor, took ~2 hours. Your mowing area is not very big and if you don't see that growing much you may not need a $8000 mower like many here are suggesting. I went to a JD z425, 48" a lightly used one can be had for under $3k. They are simple, NOT commercial, so don't plan on leveling gravel with it, and it cut my mowing time in about half literally. I have since upgraded to a 54" z445, it is an earlier model with the Kawasaki engine which I wanted and I also rented a farm that had a yard I have to mow, a lightly used one can be had for around $3k or so if you shop around. Again these are the yellow deck, "homeowner" models but they have worked great for me. I would love to get a 54" commercial version (green deck) but the price would be double and I just can't justify that-maybe that is not an issue for you. They do ride rough, but that is somewhat a by-product of speed, again if you spend ~$8000 you can get suspensions and suspension seats etc. I mowed 2 yards all year last year and only put about 70 hours on the 54" machine.

I've test drove the more deluxe Deere front mowers & decided that I didn't like the levers-just too uncomfortable to drive-bought instead a X724 AWS with a 62" deck & really like the tractor-if the tractor could have the green deck it might be a little better but after owning this X724 AWS would be hard to buy a front mower. If I did, I'd like a front mower with a deck you could lift up 90 degree's to cleanout-believe a Grasshopper or a Woods would have this feature.. Steering wheel would be nice.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'll keep an eye on online auctions. Used in the $2-3k range is all we need. We have a few spots that the 48" barely fits through, so I think 54 would be the max to consider.

So far I've done all the mowing. She just suggested that she would do it if we got our own mower. With a 3 year old and a 3 month baby, I'm not certain that is going to change this year.

Some of you guys must have some serious yards. I can't imagine spending 1000 hours on a mower.
