You are building your retirement fund. If you have no concerns regarding funding your retirement then don't do it. I started with a trad IRA and a self employed Kehoe. I now fund a Simple IRA with limits greater than the IRA. I've been doing this for over 30 years.

When I had a loss year I would convert the Trad IRA to a Roth with no taxes owed.

You Dave, are playing the game with perfect execution. And you don't sound one bit sorry you saved the money. Been helping people plan for retirement for over thirty years, and I have yet to have a client chew me out because they saved to much money. That being said, I cannot argue with a few of the other suggestions offered. Anything that forces a person to save vs spend is going to benefit in retirement. If done on a tax advantaged basis, so much the better.
