CastusWest You must no have picked ear corn.???? I would plan on starting around oct 2 to the 9th I picked with a 706 IH mounted IH picker Had two farmer help We all had chore both night an morning Want to start by 11;O'clock go to 5 or 5;30 At first we didn't pick on sunday afternoon But 10 arces per day was very good. An this was with ear corn running from 85 to 120 bu (40 in row's). Plant rate back then was 18,500=22,500 Also something broke down all the time. Chain, tire. late in the fall ice in the elevator both on picker an the unloading in the yard. WE need time to build crib's out ofsnow fencing So 350 plus arces would take us in Late Nov.early Dec. By this time you were picking in the snow many year's An your hands an feet were as block of ice I did like picking on the ear No DRYING COST. But today we plant 32,500 to40,000 plant per acre an yeilds any were from 190 to 250 bu I wouldn't want to handle all of this on the ear Thank's but no Thank 's The combine is the way to go.
