8970 seems to be using to much fuel and we finaly got a good rain to be shut down for a week or more. The 855 is an nt big cam, cant remeber the series. Have already installed the manual pt pump. Done lots of 404,466 jd and 5.9cummins but never a common rail system like the 855. From the book it seems a good dial type torque wrench will set the valves and injectors. Any tips on removing injectors for service, reinstalling and running valves?

To clarify the torgue wrench isn't for anything but the injs, and depending on the cpl of the engine not all inj will use a torque setting for travel. You will need some small heal bars to pull them if you dont have a puller and a inj tube cleaner brush. After you get them out brush well then put a red rag around the brush and wipe the tubes out.Lube orings well and you sill need to postion them and snap them in with the heel of your hand.If you miss this step the torque on the hold downs will be wrong.Get a book for you engine and follow it from here on out.If you have top stop inj the overhead set procehdure can be different than the torque method even though you can short cut it and use the torque but I dont reccomend it.Most ag engines had the older non top stop inj in them so you need to be positive what you have first. The hold downs are critical or you will end up pulling the head for new inj coppers. If you strike water when they are pulled you will see it on top the piston. There are several ways to deal with this issue one is to ignore and the other is to pull the head and fix the inj coppers

how many hours on them? big cam injectors themselves generally give very little trouble. have you checked other things like air filter, turbo, charge air leaks, etc? not saying the overhead shouldn't be done but you may want to look things over closer before you lay the blame on bad injectors.

Dont know hours since preowner had motor replaced but dont know if inj work was done. Going to check all prelemnary items but looked over in feild and didn't see any problems except for a few head to exaustmanifold leaks that will be fixed as well. No really using any more oil than past but fuel burn is definatly higher than last year. Burning about 1 gal acre pullimg a 37fft chisle 8in deep over 12in ripped ground. Seems too much fuel.

Easy way to find out on injectors, loosen rocker, slide aside if its a step timing injector you can pull spring and plunger out, should be a # on block if id tag is gone, or call mother deere and get build sheet, Scott.

outside the head---------if you pul lthe cover off you should see some plastic oil galleys some were white others were a corral color for the step time.To set those inj you need the cummins tool to do it right and like I said before you can short cut them but I dont want to try and tell you how incase you would get on the wrong stroke. The STC inj are expensive as they have a little hydralic lifter like device inside the plunger assembly to increase inj pressures. You really needto ID the engine as I have seen several that have had serious enough modifications to throw off the first timer
