| On the east coast they are huge in Jersey, some in PA and a few in MD, but next to none in VA. I think for a lot of ready mix companies it is a matter of money. The front unloaders are more up front. They have the all wheel drive chassis usually with automatic transmissions.
In MD both front and rear loaders are maxed out at about 10 yards because of weight limits. Through he 90s most ready mix companies switched to 10 yard tri axles a half a mile long with only 100 gallons of onboard water, replacing the old Macks that held 8 or 9 with 200 gallons on a very short chassis. The norm in northern Va is a tri axle also, but they usually have the drop axle in the rear or a fold down third axle that folds up near the load hopper when not in use. Those were better to unload from because the tandem chassis was pretty short on those.
Nothing beats a front loader though. They also carried 5 chutes instead of the usual 3 | |
