Bourbon,Indiana | My understanding is.....the resisitor is to keep from burning up the points if the key switch is left on . It does nothing to affect or effect the coil operation/ life.
You will find many arguments on placement before, or after , or even inside the coil. But essentially the point is made......if the resistor is before the coil it could be bypassed to provide a "hotter" spark in hard starting conditions.
I myself have never found proof of this.
