It sounds like an electrical problem. You're going to have to catch it when it is in the mood to malfunction in order to diagnose. Then, when it is actively malfunctioning, see which device is not passing current. I have seen before where the thermostat switch will show voltage passing when the compressor is disconnected, but when connected, it will not pass enough current to engage the clutch. Follow the wiring, and where the voltage stops (or rather, the component across which voltage tests at 12V), there is your problem.
