Called a French Drain. Has been known to work, but can fail if mud washes in and fills the gravel passages. It is benefited by covering the gravel with a landscape cloth (synthetic burlap) to keep the loose dirt from washing into the gravel. The French Drain is often used with perforated tubing to expand the drainage width. It can take quite a bit of gravel to get the opening of 4" or 6" tubing and that can depend on the characteristics of the gravel. 4" =~ 100mm. 6" =~ 150 mm.
