I'm finally getting around to building a bolt bin. I just ordered a bunch of Akro-Mils 30230BLUE bins as well as 30230RED bins. These bins can be divided either from front to back or from left to right. I didn't do much planning before buying them. I also didn't do much planning before my brother started welding a rack together that will hold them all. I don't really want to have him un-do what he has done so I would like to stick with what I've got. 90 bins on the front side and 90 bins on the back side of a rolling bin storage unit. 10 columns on each side and 9 rows on each side. The original idea was for the red ones on the front side to be SAE and the blue ones on the back side to be metric. Below is the best layout I can figure out for the SAE side. You can hold on the "CTRL" key and tap the "+" key on your keyboard to make it bigger. You can hold the "CTRL" key and tap the "-" key to make it smaller. I didn't want to make it much bigger because if I did I thought it might not show up well on some smaller screens. I will divide the top two bins front to back for nuts and washers. I will divide the bottom two bins left to right for longer bolts. My primary concerns are: 1. Should I have longer lengths than 6"? We don't use them often but I thought maybe going to 8" would eleminate a few trips to town. I don't have to have 100 in each bin, maybe just 5 or so of the longer ones. 2. Should I go in 1/2" increments more or should I start skipping an inch at a time after 4" like I've done? I honestly don't even remember where the common cutoff is for skipping 1/2" vs skipping 1". A combination of those two things might make it so that it would take 2 columns for one size. I wouldn't mind that as I could just use the entire rack for SAE stuff. Also, the framework is built but the hangers are not welded to the framework. It would be easy to just not use a few rows on the bottom. Then we wouldn't have to bend over as much and we could make 2 columns per size and have SAE on both the front and back and also allow for adding a container or two per side. Does anyone have any other thoughts in general? Thanks. |
