Going to have to replace the battery in a Buick Lucerne. Is there anything special about taking out a back seat battery? Looks routine but it never hurts to ask on NAT

Nothing special other than it's a heavy buggar. Also as stated, get the right battery for the vents.

Only thing special is the price you have to pay for the privilege of having a vented battery.   No wonder  GM went broke.

GM went broke because they catered to the unions. No other reason. Building cars than need batteries you have to buy at the dealer is frustrating to you and I, but good for GM.

A guy on a car forum i'm on thought he could use an Optima because they're "sealed." Well, they're sealed until they go bad at which point acid gas comes spewing out of the vents and into the cabin.

Off topic but its a thought that comes up often, a friend told me that labor wasn't a serious cost for manufactures and surface coal mines...If that the case, I would enjoy some of that during the winter.

I don't have one, so I'm asking....is the start battery for the Lucerne UNDER the rear seat? If so, why? And, it takes a special battery? What do they cost?

Just asking. This doesn't seem like a good thing to me, though I like Buicks.

I think you can get batteries from a normal auto parts store. I got a battery for my 2000 LeSabre at my local Napa store. At the time I had never replaced the battery in the car, and I didn't even know it was under the seat until I looked it up. The Napa battery looked identical to the original GM battery. Had the same vents and everything. I don't remember it being much, if any more expensive than any other car battery I've bought at Napa.

They probably put the battery in back because there wasn't room under the hood. It would cost more with the longer cables. The battery might last longer being away from the heat.

We had an '01 LeSabre.  I had no clue where the battery was until we had to replace it.  I had to ask my mechaninc where it was! It was a bit higher because of the venting. He said be sure and pay a little more and get the right battery

Well I got something on you guys. I have a 1924 Ford Model T coupe and the battery on that is mounted under the storage area towards the back of the car! Not real accessible.

Thanks for all the tips. Easy job but a little pricey on the battery ($125) but if it lasts 8 years then I'm ok with that.

Sure... that is why they are all moving to China and Mexico... ;) I'm sure the environmental stuff and ease of going and just building something is attractive, but so is all those people who want to work.

From the little I know about coal mining, the cost of moving the overburden is the main factor in cost, but I think what I said holds true for manufacturing.

That battery that goes under the rear seat is quite variable in price. I had a range of 88-155 for that battery. They last along time because they are away from the underhood heat. We have had them last 11 years. Yes , you must get the right vented one.
