Subject: EP #0 grease for gear box??

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
I checked the oil level in my 25 year old 6' wide 540 RPM rotary mower gearbox, down far enough a guy should add some. Get operators manual: Says a special type of lubricant, permits operating without the need of a breather plug. "Use a 42 oz. grease such as Gulf Crown EP #0, Sunoco 740 A.E.P., Texaco Novatex #0, or other trademark equivalents."

Stopped at two local auto parts stores on way home, learned what EP #0 means, one guy googled it and said try John Deere. Called my dealer at quitting time, parts guy was going to look. He called back about the time I got to thinking this sounds like corn head grease-he said corn head grease is service rated NLGL grade 0.

What do you think? Run the mower tomorrow enough to warm it up, drain the gear box, and refill with JD corn head grease, or continue looking for EP #0 (which might just be equivalent to NLGI grade 0)? thanks in advance. Bruce.
