Subject: Case drain flow

Cullom, Illinois
How much oil should be returning to the tractor sump from the case drain on a hydraulic motor running a 36 row Great plains planter? Been having trouble with the hydraulic oil heating on my 305 Versatile tractor pulling a 30YP Great Plains 10 inch row planter. Tractor mechanic says 2700 PSI to run an orbit motor turning a crary fan is way to much. With the pump return and the case drain dumping oil back into the tractor sump, the oil isn't getting a chance to run through the cooler. Tractor must be OK as it handled the 24 row White fine and if I turn off the hydraulic fan and hydraulic seed drive, the oil cools right down.

So back to the case drain. Is zero oil retuned on a new pump? Just a little? Looking into the fill tube where the case drain returns, it's flowing oil as fast as it can out of the 1/4 inch hose. Similar to garden hose pressure. Seems like too much oil is bypassing. Bad seals in the motor? Got any ideas...

BTW...planter works fine but does require quite a bit of oil to keep the fan up to speed.
