yes and yes. it works best to disconnect heater hoses, and with the valve in the cab turned on, flush the heater core by itself. may take several flushes of the engine and radiator to get things cleaned up. water is cheap, use lots of it and get her clean if its past due. if it has a coolant filter that has been routinely serviced it shouldnt be bad at all. if it doesnt have a coolant filter consider getting the kit and putting one on.
