Guymon, OK | In my experience, the discs will last a long time. We had been running the same ones for nearly ten years before replacing them last year. Now, I will admit that they probably should have been changed a few years earlier, but otherwise I never noticed any erratic population until the 2011 season. Brushes should be replaced when they start to look like an old toothbrush, or a little before depending on long you keep a toothbrush.
Cleaning the discs and brushes at the end of the season will go a long way to increasing their lifespans. I like to soak the discs in hot soapy water for a few hours, then use a stiff nylon brush to scrub the seed treatment and graphite off of them. A wire brush or scraper is just going to damage the discs. The manual says to wash the brushes, too, but I just pick out any stray seeds and gently blow the dust out with compressed air. Store the discs separately from the meters to keep from smashing the brushes.
