Chillicothe, Missouri
I am not Sure how the engine reacts when the VP44 pump has failed...
Cummins designed the Pump to pull fuel from the tank, and through the fuel filters! Dodge/Chrylser placed a Vane lift pump, without a by-pass relief.

We found the lift pump on our '02 Cummins was out and replaced it before it killed the VP44
The replacement pump we installed had a by-pass check valve, then if the Vane pump quit, it would/could pull the fuel pass the vane pump to the VP44.

Also, we talked with a performance shop, and was able to get a replacement bolt for the line entering the VP44 pump; the replacemtent bolt was made so a line could be attached, which allowed us to put a pressure guage under the dash that showed how many PSI the lift pump was carrying.

We have also found it interesting, you can tell how hard it is pulling by how many PSI it drops .
just idling as it warms up, it will normally maintain 12-14 PSI I believe the lowest pressure that we have seen on our guage is approx. 7 psi under a heavy load.

Hope this helps
