Looking to buy good used backhoe, 1980 models ( what I can afford ), have found a Case 580 Super E extendahoe 2 wd that is in what looks to be really good cond.. Has 6300 hrs and has been used by farmer for last 11 years or so. Looks like it has been kept inside. Everything works well and only seems to have a few hyd. leaks, some cyl. that are leaking alittle also. Is the hours too much for a hoe? Will use to fix and put in some tile and working on cleaning up tree lines. They want 12,500 which seems maybe alittle high because of hours? Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks.

Don't ever run a newer machine, you will never want the E. That being said, we have one here at the farm and I would like to see it go asap. The E we have does not even come close to the hyd power of the newer machines, and the cycle time is alot slower as well.

Former case mechanic here brought up a good point about extendahoes yesterday. While they obviously have a longer reach, you do lose out on some lift capacity as the boom weighs at least 800lbs more. Just something to keep in mind, depending on what you plan to do with it

I think that is why the newer ones have the lift specs higher to take the problem out

The extendahoe s just as nice, as wearing boots in the mud

I went from a 2wd 580 C to a 4wd 580 Super L. The 4 wheel drive is a huge benifit to me. It never failed when I was fixing water leaks with the 2 wheel drive 580C I had trouble backfilling with the loader in the mud. Couldn't push much of a pile or have to much in the bucket or you would spin out.

I blew up the motor on my 580 C at around 7600hrs. My 580 Super L has a 3.9 cummins engine. Pretty much trouble free so far.

Caldwell County Kentucky
We just sold a Super E for $11,500. It was a 2wd, no extendahoe, rops only. Had 5,000 something hours. We now have a little bit newer Ford 555D with a cab and heat.
We had the Super E for 3 years-farm use only. First backhoe we ever owned-I bet we paid for that Super E easy, when compared to paying someone else to do all the work we did with it.
The E was about a 1985 year model with the 3.9 Cummins. Very weathered and used when we got it. We had to put hyd. cylinder kits in 5 or 6 of the cylinders while we had it. The steering hyd. cylinders where the hardest since they are smaller.
It had some leaks off the hyd. tank and fuel tank and somewhere else. Not a big deal, just parked it somewhere we could clean up if the machine sat for a while.
The other posters are correct, not a lot of power, but it was enough. Ran the tach about 1500-1700 when digging. I could load a truck faster with it than the CaseIH MXU110 fwd with a loader and bigger bucket on the CaseIH. The backhoe can "cycle" faster between scoops.
The E had a fair amount of play in the pivots on the backhoe, but we just operated it to compensate-had 4 stick controls. I helped a neighbor dig out a busted irrigation pipe that took some finess, worked fine. It's taking some getting use to with the Ford-it has 2 stick controls.
Looking back, I don't know how we ever did without a backhoe.
Hope this helps.

Northern CA
It is high for our area. My neighbors just bought a fairly nice 590K, 4x4, extendahoe with 5000 hours for $13000
